Performances

comics reading, Carl Antonowicz

A large part of my practice is the development and presentation of what I call performance comics. Not dissimilar to radio plays with illustrations, these pieces tread the line between live comic reading, radio play, stage performance, and conceptual fruit-smashing piece.

As of this writing (January 2020), I have developed and debuted two evening-length pieces and one solo one-act short piece, all but one of which were adapted from pre-existing works. It is my goal for this year to develop a performance comic that is specifically its own concept and not a retrofitting. Even Buer's Kiss, which was specifically drawn with the stage in mind, I feel I privileged the page over the stage. I'm not sure as of this writing what a true performance comic would look like, but I know I've not quite gotten there yet.
